Gerald Mills

A Wildwood man who had hoped to stay out of jail was arrested on a drunk driving charge.

Gerald Wayne Mills, 54, of Wildwood, had been driving a silver 1997 Ford F-150 that was pulled over at about 9 p.m. Monday at the intersection of County Road 466 and U.S. 301 in Oxford, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. It appeared Mills had been drinking.

Mills asked the deputy to let him go.

“I have stayed out of trouble for a while and don’t want to go back to jail,” said Mills, whose record includes a 2018 arrest at the Burger King on State Road 44 in Wildwood.

He struggled through field sobriety exercises and provided breath samples that registered .013 and .010 blood alcohol content. Because of the low breath sample, a urine sample was requested. Mills refused to provide one.

He was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and driving while license suspended. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $2,000 bond.
