A Lady Lake man was arrested for battery after allegedly strangling his wife for supposedly saying another man’s name during intimacy.
The wife of 33-year-old Tyreese Tyrone Powell invited him to an undisclosed apartment in Lady Lake on Wednesday night to work out their relationship, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. He has a history of domestic violence, including an open case with an active no-contact order with his wife out of Sumer County.

The couple became intimate with one another until Powell supposedly heard her say another man’s name. Angry, he put his hand on her throat and pressed down across her windpipe with his thumb. He then placed both hands on the side of her head and squeezed. She sustained some redness around her neck and on her forehead, the report said.
Law enforcement canvassed the area for Powell, who had fled the area once they arrived. One of the officers spotted him coming closer in front of the apartment and called out his name. Powell put his hands behind his back before telling his side of the story, smelling of alcohol as he did so, the report said.
He advised that he was trying to leave a verbal altercation he had gotten into with his wife. He would not say anything other than that he had a new job and was doing well. He later added that he did not put his hands on her, the report said.
Powell would not corroborate what happened and became emotional while being placed into custody, behavior known to correlate with being intoxicated. He then stated he did not want to go to jail and that he was suicidal. He advised that he just needed to catch a break and did not “need this,” the report said.
He also admitted he was aware of the no-contact order, and he should never have come over. He and his wife had been together since they were 18 years old, about 16 years, and have two children together, the report said.
Powell was arrested on charges of domestic battery by strangulation and violate pretrial release conditions violated for domestic violence. He was booked at Lake County Jail without bond.
