Here’s some disappointing news for Villagers who had hopes of putting in artificial turf at their homes.
This past week, District Counsel Mark Brionez updated Community Development District boards in The Villages, making them aware that they are still empowered to prevent homeowners from using artificial grass.
Last year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill that preempts local governments from banning synthetic turf on single-family properties under one acre, meaning homeowners can install compliant turf despite what their local government might have to say about it. The new law had prompted some confusion here in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.
Many Villagers would like to use artificial grass because it requires virtually no maintenance and no water.
While state law prevents counties and cities from banning synthetic turf that meets Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) standards, CDDs are granted a specific exception. This means CDDs can continue to restrict or regulate artificial turf to enforce deed restrictions.
