Congressman Paul Ryan is making a return to The Villages.
He will be visiting Florida’s Friendliest Hometown on Aug. 23, signing copies of his book, “The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea.” The event is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
Ryan made his public debut as Mitt Romney’s running mate on Aug. 18, 2012 with a rally at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square. He brought along his mother Betty, a Florida retiree. He talked about the importance of preserving Medicare and Social Security.
One week earlier, Romney had selected Ryan from a pool of possible running mates that included New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Florida’s own Marco Rubio.
Ryan is considered to be a possible presidential contender in 2016.
On Sunday, he appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
On the morning talk show, he defended his plan that would consolidate 11 safety-net programs such as food stamps and housing vouchers into a single block grant for states, with state governments working with local officials, nonprofits and faith-based groups to distribute the money.
“We don’t want to have a poverty management system that simply perpetuates poverty,” Ryan said. “We want to get at the root causes of poverty, to get people out of poverty.”
Since 1998, he has represented his southern Wisconsin district. He is chairman of the House Budget Committee.
