Local residents encouraged to turn out to welcome home Honor Flight veterans

Local residents are encouraged to turn out Thursday night to welcome home 35 area World War II veterans returning from Villages Honor Flight.

They are scheduled to arrive at 11 p.m. at American Legion Post 347 in Lady Lake. Entertainment begins at 10 p.m.

This trip to see the war memorials in Washington D.C. will mark the 500th veteran traveling on Villages Honor Flight.

Barb Cooksey of the Village of Polo Ridge will serve as a first-time flight director on this trip.

“These World War II veterans made extreme personal sacrifices and risked their lives to literally save the world,” said Villages Honor Flight President Mark Erdich. “We are honored that we can provide this trip for them and thank them for their valiant and unselfish service.”

Those attending are encouraged to bring chairs and American flags.
