Sumter County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy critically injured on his way to work

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy was critically injured while on his way to work early Tuesday morning.

James Bryon Russo, 31, was airlifted from the scene of the single-vehicle accident which occurred at 5:17 a.m. in Hernando County.

He had been driving a 2007 four-door Toyota eastbound on State Road 50 when his vehicle entered the center median, he overcorrected and the vehicle overturned, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He was thrown from the vehicle in the crash, the report indicated. The crash closed the westbound lanes of SR50.

Russo began his employment with the Sumter County Detention Center as a detention support specialist in December 2013 and has since promoted to a detention deputy.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Russo and his family during this difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
