If Percival could talk, he would tell a harrowing story of the night he came face to face with a bear and survived the brutal attack.
In literature, Percival is a man raised in the wilderness, who later becomes one of King Arthur’s knights. In Lake County, Percival is a tri-color purebred Treeing Walker Coonhound. He too, grew up in the woods, and the staff and volunteers of the Lake County shelter are hoping his story is as triumphant as that of the fictional knight.
“In addition to the enormous crater in his back, he had hemorrhaging behind his eye,” said Whitney Luckhart, a Lake County Animal Services volunteer who is fostering Percival, or Percy for short. “He was hosting thousands of ticks, but always maintained a pleasant demeanor. He has a very cheerful personality and loves attention.”
Animal Services cleaned Percy up and Luckhart continues to care for his healing wound. He is under 2 years old and will weigh less than 60 pounds when full grown.
“The shelter team goes to great lengths to get needed care for every dog possible, and we are very fortunate to have wonderful volunteers and benefactors,” said Brian Sheahan, director of Lake County’s Community Safety & Compliance Department.
Percy is good with kids, dogs and cats. He is neutered and up to date with his vaccinations. If you are interested in adopting Percival, call the shelter at 352-343-9688. His adoption fee is $50.
