Flags for Fallen Vets at Florida National Cemetery canceled due to COVID-19 crisis

The annual Flags For Fallen Vets event on Memorial Day weekend has been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The effort normally takes place on Memorial Day at the Florida National Cemetery. Busloads of Villagers typically make the trek to the cemetery to show their respects on a day that sees thousands of people placing American flags beside the white marble tombstones at the Bushnell cemetery.

Currently, daily memorial services aren’t being conducted at any of the National Cemeteries and burials are limited to 10 attendees. And while Florida National Cemetery hasn’t canceled the Memorial Day event, it’s expected that attendance will be restricted, with social distancing guidelines enforced.

“As Americans have pulled together to defeat the invisible enemy of this year, we look forward to returning for 2021 Memorial Day Flag Placement,” wrote Doug Gardner, of Flags for Fallen Vets Inc. “(We) are dedicated to making it the best ever. Thanks for volunteering and above all stay safe!”
