70-year-old Villager arrested after brawl breaks out over dogs

James Nally

A 70-year-old Villager was arrested after a brawl broke out over dogs Sunday evening in the Rio Grande Villas.

A man was reportedly attempting to load his dogs onto a golf cart at his home in the 1300 block of La Jolla Circle when the dogs ran to and began barking at a dog being walked by a female companion of James Joseph Nally, who also lives on La Jolla Circle.

A witness heard the disturbance and spotted Nally on top of the other man in the roadway, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The witness told sheriff’s deputies he saw Nally punch the man nine times in the face and the other man did not return any punches, the report said.

The other man retreated to his driveway, but was followed by the 6-foot 1-inch Massachusetts native who refused to leave, according to the arrest report.

The report noted that the man had suffered two chipped teeth, he had a lacerated lip and there was dried blood on his shirt, which had been stretched out.

Nally claimed the other man, who is 47 years old, had attacked him.

The woman who had been walking with Nally told deputies that everything “happened so fast that she could not tell who punched who first,” the report said.

Nally was arrested on a charge of battery and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $1,000 bond.
