Residents dumping Irma debris, trash at postal stations, recreation centers despite pleas

Residents continue to dump debris from Hurricane Irma at postal stations and recreation centers despite pleas to stop from the District Office.

“It makes the cleanup more difficult and becomes a problem at peak times at recreation centers,” said Assistant District Manager Richard Baier.

Plastic and paper bags were among Hurricane Irma debris dumped at Laurel Manor Recreation Center.

He addressed the problem during Community Development District meetings on Friday.

He said that people also have been dumping trash including old furniture.

Notices are being posted at postal stations to remind would-be dumpers that the activity is illegal, Baier said.

CDD 4 Supervisor Don Deakin said it wasn’t necessarily residents dumping the debris.

He said unscrupulous haulers had approached residents and offered to take away the debris, leading Villagers to think the debris was being taken to a reputable dump site.  However, the debris was hauled to postal stations and recreation centers and dumped after the Villagers’ money had been taken.

“Villagers and The Villages have been victimized,” he said.
