A Wildwood man was arrested Friday afternoon in connection with a petit theft that took place earlier this month at the Dollar General store on Main Street.
Nathaniel Donnell was taken into custody after a Wildwood Police officer spotted him at Kamal Mini Mart, at 327 Kilgore St., shortly after 4 p.m. Friday. His arrest followed the theft of an $8 package of white crew socks on Aug. 7 from the Dollar General store, located at 629 S. Main St. An officer watched a man on video surveillance footage put what appeared to be a package of socks under a pink towel on his shoulder and leave the store, a Wildwood police report states.
The man, later identified as Donnell, was seen leaving the area of the store in a green pickup truck with orange ties around the grill. A Dollar General employee told the officer he’d be able to identify Donnell if he saw him again.
The officer then made contact with the driver of the green pickup at Dev Food Mart on Main Street. He said he picked up Donnell at the Sumter County Animal Hospital near the Dollar General store and had no idea what had occurred earlier. He said he knew Donnell as “Kenny Bob” and then as “Nathan.” He said he dropped him off over by “the boardwalk” – apartments located at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Kilgore Street.
After the Dollar General employee positively identified Donnell in a photo lineup, officers verified that he was living in the “boardwalk” apartments and has a tattoo that says “Kenny Bob” on his left chest. They ran a criminal history and discovered that Donnell had been found guilty of petit theft and shoplifting five times in the past: Nov. 14, 2008; Jan. 29, 2007; Sept. 14, 2004; Jan. 24, 2001 and May 31, 2000. He also had two prior charges for failure to appear in court, the report says.
Donnell, who listed his address as 9963 County Road 231, was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center, charged with larceny and held on $2,000 bond.
