Driver about to surrender wheel arrested on drunk driving charge

Booker John Mathieu

A driver who was about to surrender the wheel to a passenger was arrested Monday night on a drunk driving charge.

Booker John Mathieu, 28, of Oxford, had been driving a black Honda passenger car at about 11 p.m. when he stopped in the roadway at County Road 466 and County Road 201 to have his passenger take over driving, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He admitted he had been drinking.

Seven empty Busch beer cans were found on the floor of the vehicle. There was also an unopened can of Busch beer in the car.

Mathieu refused to participate in field sobriety exercises and later told the deputy he was “too drunk to remember his middle name,” according to the report. He also refused to provide a breath sample.

A check revealed Mathieu had a 2010 DUI conviction in Sumter County.

He was booked on a charge of DUI at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $1,000.
