Villager celebrates birthday with hole-in-one at legendary St. Andrews course

Imagine the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a round of golf on the Old Course of St. Andrews. The Scottish greens have hosted some of history’s most memorable tournaments, including the British Open, since its founding in 1552.

Now imagine that even though you’re not an avid golfer, you sink a hole-in-one there – on your birthday, no less!

Joe and Lori Huff are all smiles after her hole-in-one at the famous Old Course at St. Andrews.

Lori Huff, of the Village of Glenbrook, no longer needs to fantasize. While on vacation in Scotland, the occasional golfer made the dream shot on the eight hole on the world’s oldest course.

“My husband, Joe, and I were enjoying the historic fairways and scenic vistas while battling the North Sea winds,” she said. “He recommended a driver for the 154-yard-long fairway. I’m just a fair-weather golfer, but Joe’s a 3-handicap, so I took his advice.”

In recognition of the remarkable accomplishment, Lori received a certificate that reads, in part: “St. Andrews Links is the Home of Golf, where the game developed and where the spirit and traditions of golf have been safeguarded and cherished for six centuries.”

Lori Huff received this certificate from St. Andrews Links for scoring a hole-in-one on the historic course.

“We had made reservations more than a year ago for a tee time as part of our goal to experience courses in Ireland and Scotland,” Lori said.

Four years ago, the couple moved to The Villages from Atlanta to be closer to Lori’s mother – who lives around the corner.

“We both continue to work full-time, so we look forward to Friday evening couples golf and enjoy the camaraderie of neighbors,” Joe said.

Added Lori: “This has been such an amazing experience for three occurrences on the same day: to play the Old Course, to shoot a hole-in-one, and to do so on my 60th birthday. This certainly has sparked my interest to play even more.”
