Mechanical issues force cancellation of display of vintage World War II planes

The National Wings of Freedom Tour has canceled its upcoming stop at Leesburg International Airport.

The event, which was supposed to be put on by the Collings Foundation and feature vintage World War II aircraft, had been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 11, as part of a 109-city tour. The show was to include a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress named “Nine O Nine,” a Consolidated B-24 Liberator called “Witchcraft” and a North American P-51 Mustang known as “Toulouse Nuts.”

The Collings Foundation hopes to reschedule a show at Leesburg International Airport featuring a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress named ‘Nine O Nine,’ a Consolidated B-24 Liberator called ‘Witchcraft’ and a North American P-51 Mustang known as ‘Toulouse Nuts.’ The event was planned for Nov. 8 but mechanical issues forced the non-profit educational foundation to cancel it and look for a possible date in January to bring the vintage World War II aircraft to the local area.

But the nonprofit foundation announced Thursday that it is being forced to cancel the event because of mechanical issues. The group hopes to reschedule the fly-in and three-day show for some time in January 2019.

The Collings Foundation is a non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing “living history” events that allow people to learn more about their heritage and history through direct participation. The Nationwide Wings of Freedom Tour is celebrating its 29th year and visits an average of 110 cities in over 35 states annually.
