Construction of $159,000 bathroom to begin next month at Shay Gate

A remodeling project at the Shay Gate that will include the addition of a $159,000 bathroom is set to begin next month.

The Amenity Authority Committee agreed earlier this year to move forward with the construction of a restroom for the gate attendant after the topic stirred widespread discussion in The Villages. Ideas included manning the gate with a robot, eliminating the attendant and putting a porta-potty next to the gate. Those ideas were rejected by the AAC. Genesis Construction and Management Inc. won the project with a low bid of $159,355.

About 1,700 cars per day pass through the Shay Gate.

The project is set to begin Dec. 2 at the gate on the Historic Side of The Villages.

Other site improvements will include utility upgrades, lane improvements and parking improvements. The project is scheduled to be completed on Feb. 2.

All of the construction and site improvements will take place in the right of way along Shay Boulevard. There should be no interruption in utility services for area homeowners. The westerly outbound or exit lane of Shay Boulevard from the corner of Shay Boulevard and Tarrson Boulevard to Griffin Road will be closed while this work takes place. The easterly entry lane from Griffin Road will remain open. Those traveling in the area are asked to reduce speed and proceed with caution. Detour signage and other means of directing traffic will be used to guide the flow of traffic safety through the neighborhood. The gate house will remain closed during the construction. If you have any questions or would like additional information, contact District Property Management at 753-4022.
