The Villages SAR to host discussion about famed naval battle at Valcour Island

The Villages Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will host a talk about a famous naval battle at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 12 at Captiva Recreation Center.

Richard and Patricia Hubert will speak abut the naval battle of Valcour Island. Visitors are welcome.

The Battle of Valcour Island took place on Oct. 11, 1776, in Valcour Bay, a narrow strait between the New York mainland and Valcour Island. The battle is generally regarded as one of the first naval battles of the American Revolutionary War, and one of the first fought by the United States Navy.

Patricia Hubert is a retired teacher with a degree in education and history who taught in Virginia and Connecticut. She also wrote a history book titled “Major Phillip M. Ulmer, A Hero of the American Revolution” which covers the career of Major Ulmer from the beginning of the war through Valley Forge and concentrating on the Battle of Valcour Island where he was captain of the gunboat Spitfire. She is a descendent of the Ulmer family.

Richard Hubert is a retired software engineer with a background in electrical engineering and business. He began his career as a U.S. Navy officer on destroyers in the Caribbean and South America. He and Patricia were stationed overseas on Antigua in the West Indies. After service he spent the rest of his career as a software engineer where he developed systems for manufacturing, sales, postal, and scientific industries. Richard’s fourth great-grandfather was also captain of a ship in the American fleet at Valcour.

Richard and Patricia Hubert, former residents of Newtown, Conn., now live in the Village of Piedmont.
