Daniel Gillespie

Daniel Joseph Gillespie, II, 86, of the Villages, FL, passed away peacefully November 20, 2014. Dan was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA on January 7, 1928 and graduated with a Business Degree from St. Joseph’s College. Dan served as a proud member of the Armed Forces, the US Army, as a communications specialist near the border of North Korea prior to the Korean War, 1948-1949. Dan met Eleanor Vogel at an Irish Ball and on Oct. 13, 1951 they married. Dan was hard working and dedicated, employed in the field of finance, working 35 years in the banking industry, finishing his career as the Executive Vice President of Citizens Bank of Maryland. Dan was also an instructor for the Washington Metro Area Power Squadron and for the American Institute of Banking. After retirement, he spent years boating and fishing in Maryland and then he and Eleanor moved to The Villages in 1996 where he led an active life golfing and traveling across the US and Europe. Dan was a active member of many clubs including the Hummel Club, the Maryland Club, the Irish/American Club, the Old Friends Golf Club, the American Legion Post 347 and Hacienda East Club. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor, daughters Dr. Kathy Blanche (Jim), Cheryl Kenny (RDML Mark), Dr. Deborah Frey (Joel), Son Daniel III (Nancy) and 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel and Catherine Gillespie, brother Jim and sister Cass (Gillespie) Collings, wife of Larry. Dan was loved by many and was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed but never forgotten. A memorial mass was held at St Timothy’s Catholic Church on Nov 29, 2014. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cornerstone Hospice.
