A song titled “Sex on the Square,” debuted this weekend during a party in The Villages.
Outlaw country artist Dale Griffin wrote the song about three weeks ago and unveiled it during an evening party at a home in the Haciendas of Mission Hills.
“The song really wrote itself,” Griffin said.
Like so many others who have heard the story of the now infamous arrest of a couple having sex this summer at the pavilion at Lake Sumter Landing Market Square, he was struck by the harsh punishment.
“Six months? Really?” he asked.
During his performance in The Villages this weekend, it was clear that Griffin prefers the stories told by some of music’s great “non conformists.” He performed songs made famous by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and John Prine during the party.
Griffin clearly fits into that mold. Years ago, Nashville suits told him to cut his hair, wear a western-style shirt (to cover his tattoos) and sing love songs.
“I said, ‘Man, I am going through my third divorce. What do I know about love songs?'” Griffin said.
On Saturday night his song, “Sex on the Square,” stole the show.
And with the latest couple arrested after allegedly having sex on a utility box at Morse Boulevard and El Camino Real, Griffin has been inspired to write another song.
“It’s called ‘Shocking Sex,'” Griffin told the audience.
