U.S. Rep. Rich Nugent, a Republican who represents a large portion of The Villages, joined in a mostly party-line vote this past week aimed at defunding the Affordable Care Act.
By a 230-189 margin, the House passed a short-term government spending plan that would eliminate all funding for Obamacare.
“Regardless of how you feel about the lawÂ’s objectives and how it intends to achieve those objectives, the actual implementation of the law so far has been a disaster. It is already resulted in hours being cut back for thousands and thousands of Americans. ItÂ’s resulted in dropped coverage. ItÂ’s resulted in fundamental changes to the availability of healthcare services in some parts of the country. And itÂ’s already run out of money in some of the most highly-touted parts of the program – the pre-existing condition fund is a prime example,” Nugent said in his regular weekend message to constituents.
There are fears that this could lead to a government shutdown.
The measure now moves to the U.S. Senate which is controlled by Democrats.
In appearances last month in The Villages, Lady Lake and Wildwood, Nugent repeatedly said he is proud of his record fighting against Obamacare and will continue to do so.
U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Gainesville, also supported the measure to defund Obamacare.
“Time to put ego and politics aside and admit this is just bad law,” said Yoho who represents part of Marion County.
