A man with two previous drunk driving arrests, was jailed after he was caught speeding with a 12-pack of beer in his vehicle.

Leslie Michael Mauldin, 47, of Wildwood, was clocked driving at 65 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone at 12:03 a.m. Thursday on State Road 44, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. He also was not wearing his seatbelt.

The deputy who pulled Mauldin over spotted an open can of beer in the console of Mauldin’s vehicle. When the deputy asked him if he had been drinking, Mauldin responded, “Well, I had maybe one.” The deputy later discovered a 12-pack in the vehicle with three cans missing.

Mauldin failed field sobriety exercises. He refused to provide a breath sample.

A criminal history check revealed he had been convicted of drunk driving in 1990 and 1991 in Florida.

Mauldin was booked on a charge of driving under the influence at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $5,000.
