A 74-year-old New Yorker was killed early Thursday morning when he was struck by a van while he was walking along Interstate 75 in Marion County.
Angel L. Rios of Long Island City, N.Y. died after he was struck by the van driven by Shequita V. Dortly, 35, of Ocala at 6:55 a.m. on I-75 at Mile Marker 365, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dortly suffered minor injuries and was transported to North Florida Regional Hospital.
The report noted that it was dark and Dortly could not see Rios.
He had been a passenger in an accident at that same location at 3:27 a.m.
Rios had been riding in a Ford Ranger driven by Heriberto M. Ramos, 68, of Brooksville. Their truck collided with a semi hauling frozen food driven by Wilfredo Diaz, 40, of Davenport. The semi had also collided with a vehicle driven by Joe M. Miranda, 68, of Coral Springs. Miranda suffered minor injuries and was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
That crash shut down a section of I-75 for nearly three hours while debris was removed.
