Suspect in theft of money from mother free on bond after month behind bars

Dawn Marie Morris

A suspect in the theft of money from her mother is free on bond after more than a month behind bars.

Dawn Marie Morris, 52, was released Friday from the Sumter County Detention Center after posting $500 bond. She had been arrested April 8 after she was found slumped over the wheel of a vehicle parked at Arbor Medical at Laurel Manor Professional Plaza.

Morris has gotten a break in the case. A burglary charge has been dismissed and she is now facing only a misdemeanor charge of petit theft.

Her mother, a resident of the Village of Santo Domingo, had called 911 early on the morning of April 4 to report the theft of money from her wallet. She said she had been sleeping on the couch when she was awakened by a noise. She found her daughter crawling on the floor behind the couch. Morris had cash in one hand and her mother’s wallet in the other hand.

She grabbed the cash and the wallet and demanded to know how Morris had gotten into the home. It was later determined she had gotten in through a window at the rear of the home.

Morris, who did not have permission to be in the home, got away with $20, the arrest report indicated.

Dawn Marie Morris was reported missing in 2016.

Morris was reported missing in 2016 and at the time was living with her parents, who purchased their home in 2005 in the Village of Santo Domingo. Morris’ father passed away in 2017.

At the time of her disappearance in 2016, Morris was driving her parents’ red Toyota Camry with a handicapped license plate. The car was used as a getaway vehicle in the slaying of a Lady Lake man.

Morris was later found in Boynton Beach. She claimed the Camry had been stolen.
