Villager arrested at his home after tracked down in golf cart road-rage incident

William Norton

A Villager was arrested Friday morning at his home in the Village of Sanibel after being tracked down in a golf cart road-rage incident that occurred earlier this year.

William E. Norton, 58, was arrested at about 10:30 a.m. at his home at 2864 Rain Lily Loop by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies.

He was tracked down after a Jan. 21 incident at the intersection of Heald Way and Moyer Loop, not far from the new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market south of County Road 466A.

Norton admitted to deputies that he was trying to “intimidate” a man driving a car with whom he had been involved in an argument with over a traffic dispute. The victim claims Norton reached into his car and struck his face with an open hand during the dispute.

Norton reportedly fled the scene in his golf cart after the altercation. The man immediately contacted law enforcement and provided a detailed description of the man who had attacked him and the golf cart in which he fled.

The victim spotted Norton’s golf cart on March 26 in a parking lot. He took several digital photos of the golf cart and provided the photos to the sheriff’s office. A deputy contacted Norton’s wife and showed her photos of the golf cart. She confirmed it belonged to her and Norton.

The deputy then obtained a photo of Norton from his Michigan driver’s license and a photo lineup was shown to the victim. He positively identified Norton as the man involved in the January road-rage incident.

Norton was arrested on a felony charge of burglary with assault or battery and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond has been set at $25,000.
