A Villages team from Glenview Tennis Center was a finalist in the USTA 7.0 Mixed (55+) Sectional Tournament in St. Petersburg that was held Nov. 3-5.
The team was part of a USTA tennis league that competed during the season that lasted from April 28 through June 23.
The league consisted of four teams from USTA Region 2 (Marion). Teams were from Citrus Hills Country Club, Glenview Tennis Center (The Villages) and two (2) from Fort King Tennis Center (Ocala). The Villages team won the league with an 8-1 record.
That qualified The Villages team to compete in the USTA 7.0/8.0 Mixed (55+) Sectional Championships in St. Petersburg. In the 7.0 Mixed Division, there were three USTA Florida Regions (Marion/Alachua, Volusia and Collier) competing for the championship. Teams included: The Villages, Gainesville, Ocala, Marco Island and two from Deland.
After two days of competition, the championship came down to the final match with two undefeated teams, The Villages and Deland. Deland edged out the win 2-1, with the match being decided by a third-set tiebreaker, which ended 11-9.
The players from The Villages included Mike James (captain), Barb Cox, Debby McCoy, Pat James, Marcia Plante, Elfie Meyer, Jim Robertson, Kent Bradford, John Ulrich, Bob Kluemper, Lorna Cable and David Cable.
