A Lady Lake police K-9 sniffed out a pair with a large cache of illegal drugs, leading to their arrest.
A Lady Lake police officer spotted a gray Pontiac without a visible taglight at about 10 p.m. Saturday traveling south on U.S. Hwy. 27/441.
The driver was identified as 28-year-old Kaila Janelle Adams, of Fruitland Park, and a passenger in the vehicle was identified as 31-year-old Michael Trumaine Benn, of Leesburg. The pair was asked if they had any drugs in the vehicle and they claimed they did not. They also refused to consent to a search.
K-9 Lux was summoned to the scene and alerted on the vehicle, indicating the likely presence of narcotics.
A clear bag containing 110 grams of methamphetamine was found in the vehicle’s center console. Another clear bag containing 14 grams of marijuana, a pipe with the residue of marijuana, two Oxycodone pills and a gram of heroin were also discovered in the vehicle.
Adams and Benn were arrested on charges including trafficking methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were booked at the Lake County Jail. Adams’ bond was set at $56,000. Benn’s bond was set at $54,000.
Adams was arrested last year after attempting to shoplift nearly $1,000 in merchandise at Belk at La Plaza Grande in The Villages. At the time of her arrest, she had a toddler and two children with her.
Benn had been arrested in 2017 at The Villages Regional Hospital with a 9mm gun tucked in his backpack.
