Congressman Daniel Webster contends President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border wouldn’t have been his first choice, but he believes the president is on solid legal ground.
“We’re going to confront the national security crisis on our southern border and we’re going to do it one way or the other,” the president announced Friday from the Rose Garden.
Webster, a Republican who represents The Villages, said President Trump is “taking his responsibility seriously” and is properly using the power granted to him.

“The declaration of national emergency was not my preferred route, as I would like to see a more collaborative approach between the Executive and Legislative branches, but I believe the President stands on solid legal ground,” Webster said.
Trump’s declaration came one day after he signed a spending measure that includes $1.3 billion in border security funding, far short of the $5.7 billion he wanted.
The GOP Congressman voted against the appropriations package the president signed.
“It provides a mere $1.375 billion for 55 miles of a new wall and the strings attached make the ability to actually erect any new physical barrier nigh impossible,” Webster said.
