Man gets bond money back after prosecutor drops case in golf cart DUI

Raymond Francis Callahan Jr.

A North Carolina man will get his bond money back after a prosecutor dropped a case of driving under the influence in connection with the man’s arrest this summer while driving a golf cart in The Villages.

This past week, a request was filed in Sumter County Court for a $1,000 refund for 41-year-old Raymond Francis Callahan Jr. of Raeford, N.C. Earlier this month, the prosecutor’s office announced no information would be filed in the case due to “evidence legally insufficient to prove guilt.”

Callahan had been arrested in the wee hours of the morning of July 14 after he was spotted in a golf cart in the roundabout at Stillwater Trail and Morse Boulevard. He appeared to be “intoxicated and unsure of his location,” according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Callahan reportedly got “increasingly belligerent” during field sobriety exercises.” When he was asked to provide a breath sample, he refused.
