5-year-old girl critically injured in ATV accident

A 5-year-old girl was critically injured Saturday night when she was thrown from an Arctic Cat ATV on which she had been riding.

Kingsley Tompkins of Newberry was riding on the ATV driven by Benjamin Tompkins, 39, of Newberry at 7:20 p.m. Saturday on private property in Gilchrist County, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. He was seriously and was transported to UF Health in Gainesville along with Kingsley Tompkins.

Benjamin Tompkins had been making a sharp U-turn when he lost control of the ATV. After being thrown from the ATV, he and the 5-year-old girl were trapped under it.

Two others riding on the ATV, 61-year-old Ian Craw of Gainesville and 11-year-old Dylan Tompkins also of Gainesville, escaped injury. They had been properly restrained and remained inside the passenger area of the ATV, the FHP report noted.
