VHS scraps ‘King and I,’ opts instead for musical variety show

It hasn’t opened yet but The Sharon is already a hit.

The Sharon L. Morse Performing Arts Center has virtually sold out the first three shows to appear at the venue in Spanish Springs Town Square.
Broadway star Patti LuPone will officially open The Sharon with a gala on April 30. Her concert program is called, “COULDA, WOULDA, SHOULDA….played that part.” Only a handful of seats (9) were available on Wednesday, according to The Villages Entertainment Web site.
Although tickets cost $150 for all seats, that hasn’t stopped fans from buying them.

The opening will be treated as a major event in The Villages. It is considered a “formal” dress event and champagne and hors d’oeuvres will be served. There will also be pre-show and post-show entertainment.
The Villages Charter High School will have a three-night stand at The Sharon with a variety show  on April 16-18. VHS was to present “The King and I,” but due to a last-minute licensing issue, VHS has had to scrap the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic and will instead perform a variety show. Those holding “The King and I” tickets will have them honored at the door.  Those who don’t wish to attend the VHS musical variety show can return their tickets to the place of purchase for a refund.

The VHS performance is considered a pre-opening and warm-up before the official opening night. Most of the seats, costing $15 and $20, are gone and there were none available Wednesday at The Villages Entertainment Web site. Other tickets were marked “on hold.”
Also, “Million Dollar Quartet,” the first big touring musical to play The Sharon on May 18-19, is just about sold out. There were a handful of tickets (under 20) for each night, according to The Villages Entertainment Web site.
Tickets cost $65 to $100 for the show, which tells of a one-night recording session back in the 1950s with Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins.
