Shoplifters attempt to take nearly $500 in merchandise from Publix

Two alleged shoplifters attempting to take nearly $500 in merchandise from the Publix at Grand Traverse Plaza in The Villages were arrested Tuesday.

Linsey Cook Adams, 35, of Fruitland Park was stopped by store management shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday when she attempted to leave the store with $325.07 in merchandise in a shopping cart, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

She told an officer “I didn’t pay,” in reference to the merchandise.

She was arrested on a felony charge of larceny and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $2,000 bond.

On Monday, 59-year-old Brian David Brodeur of Wildwood was at the same Publix and allegedly attempted to leave the store with $161.18 in merchandise in a shopping cart, according to another arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. After he was detained, Brodeur told store management he had company coming over and left the store.

Police went to a home on Tuesday in the 800 block of Ontario Street and found Brodeur hiding in a closet. When officers located him, he tried to pull away from them.

Brodeur was arrested on charges of petit retail theft and resisting an officer. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center on $1,500 bond.
