The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert about an apparent FEMA scam.
Deputies responded Monday to a theft complaint.
The victim said two Hispanic males arrived at her residence at approximately 3 p.m, implying they were representatives with FEMA, sent to her residence to survey the damage to her home following Hurricane Irma. The men entered her residence to survey the damage to the roof. The victim said she believed the younger male subject distracted her as the older subject walked throughout her residence. Shortly after the two left the victim’s residence, the victim discovered jewelry missing from her and her daughter’s bedroom. The subjects told the victim they would return in ten minutes upon their departure from the home; however, they have not returned to the residence since.
The victim spoke with actual FEMA members following this incident and learned they were unaware of anyone representing FEMA responding to the residence during this date to survey damage to the home. The subjects are described as driving a newer model pickup truck, possible Ford, white in color. The vehicle had no decal on the vehicle and the subjects did not wear any clothing which depicted the company they were with. The victim stated both subjects are Hispanic males of average height and medium build. The victim stated one subject appeared to be in his late 20s to early 30s with the other subject being in his 50s.
