Villagers paying for pickup service that is not being rendered

To the Editor:

During the time the yard waste pickup is being done by a contractor being paid by FEMA, we The Village residents are still paying $1 a week for the yard waste pickup that is not happening. If I assume there are 60,000 homes in The Villages, this amounts to $60,000 a week we are paying to the district for a service that is not being performed.
I generally do not pay for a service that is not supplied. The actual amount the VCDD is being paid for this service is $1 a week for everyone of your customers while only you know what that number is. Granted, a $1 a week for me is not that big a deal, but when you look at the magnitude of the money to date, it is very significant and I would like to know what it is being used for?
I would like to suggest that the money be tagged and used as a donation to the Red Cross Hurricane Fund to assist in efforts in Florida and Texas. The other thought is since the federal government is currently paying for waste pickup, that the money be applied to the national debt. Every little bit helps.
