A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to probation for punching a Villager in August at the Pimlico Pool.

John Richard Gagnon, who resides on Forsythe Terrace in the Village of Summerhill, was arrested on Aug. 2 after he allegedly punched the grandfather who had objected to Gagnon approaching his nine-year-old granddaughter and her two 10-year-old friends. Gagnon was also accused of taking the man’s iPhone.

On Tuesday, Gagnon pleaded no contest in Sumter County Court to reduced charges of battery and petty theft. He had originally been charged with battery on a person over the age of 65 and grand theft.

He will have to serve 12 months probation and he was fined $100. He will also have to undergo eight hours of anger management training. Gagnon was represented by attorney Jamie Washo.

Gagnon has a prior criminal history.

In 2011 in Sumter County Court, he pleaded no contest to a charge of aggravated battery. He was sentenced to three years probation. He was also sentenced to 26 weeks of a batterer’s intervention program and ordered to refrain from drugs and alcohol.

In December 2012, Gagnon was granted early termination of that probation.

He was previously arrested on a charge of battery in 2004 in Reno, Nevada.

Gagnon resides in the Forsythe Terrace home purchased in 2011 by his father, John Raymond Gagnon.
