A 44-year-old Chilean man was highly intoxicated when he was involved in a golf cart crash with other golf carts Tuesday morning in The Villages, according to an arrest report.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office was called at about 8:15 a.m. to the intersection of Stillwater Trail and Buena Vista Boulevard by a Villager who dialed 911 from his golf cart.

The offending cart reportedly had been swerving on the multi-modal path, almost hitting several other golf carts, after striking another golf cart in the tunnel. It also banged into other carts. A Villager in another cart tried honking his horn to get the wayward golf cart to stop. When the cart finally stopped, a Villager stepped forward and snatched the keys out of the ignition.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they found Icaro Ulises Constenta-Carillo who deputies identified by his Chilean identification card. The deputy speaking with  Constenta-Carillo detected the smell of alcohol, according to the arrest report. The deputy asked him if he had been drinking, to which Constenta-Carillo replied he had something to drink the night before but nothing that day.

The deputy had trouble communicating with Constenta-Carillo and a bilingual deputy was called to the scene.

Constenta-Carillo said he had been fishing and did not know what had happened.

He failed field sobriety exercises. He provided breath samples which measured .254 and .246 blood alcohol content.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center where bond was set at $1,000.

The arrest report indicated that Constenta-Carillo had been staying in the Village of Poinciana. A sheriff’s office spokesman indicated Constenta-Carillo had been staying with family in The Villages.
