Village of Hemingway man tops 45,000 miles in bicycling mileage

As of March 31, bicyclist Jerry Vicenti of the Village of Hemingway has documented a total of 45,380 miles of bicycling.
Vicenti has averaged more than 7,000 miles a year since he began recording his mileage on April 1, 2010. The New Jersey native bicycles 25 miles a day, seven days a week starting between 7:30 and 8 a.m.
After moving to The Villages in 2008, Vicenti began bicycling, but did not record his mileage. In 2010, he said he “got real serious” as he recorded every mile bicycling each day to lose weight.
He bicycles at an average speed of 15 miles per hour.
“All mileage was clocked on the south side of County Road 466,” he said.
Jokingly calling himself crazy, Vicenti says he bikes the same route every day, starting by coming out of Hemingway, riding down to CR466, and traveling all the way back to the start.
The busy Villager finds time to bicycle every day, as he takes never takes vacations due to his commitments in The Villages.
A Community Development District 7 supervisor, director of membership for the POA, and president of the Italian Paisans Club, Vicenti said he feels loyal to each group and attends six meetings a month, which allows him to prioritize his bicycle rides each day.
“It keeps my mind and body in shape to embrace all my other endeavors,” Vicenti says.
Along with bicycling, Vicenti engages in other exercises such as pushups to maintain his physical fitness.
Vicenti said that people know him in The Villages not only for his involvement in the community, but also for his daily bicycling, calling his popularity “just so cool.”
