The Villages High School will be adding agriscience and construction management next year to the seven existing academies.
Over the last few months the school has been busy designing these two new academies. The job openings have been posted for two additional teachers.
Agriscience Academy
The Agriscience Academy will focus on the Horticulture Sciences and Services Programs with exploration in animals, turf management, and agribusiness. There will be a Future Farmers of America club created that will allow for many state and local activities that students can participate in. It will be open to the juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career or have an interest in the agriculture industry. When the academy is in full implementation, students will enroll as juniors in the Agriscience Foundations course with seniors enrolling in two blocked courses called Introductory to Horticulture II and III. Throughout the three courses, students will be offered a sequenced curriculum that provides a coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources career cluster. The academy students will have opportunities to work in a lab setting to gain hands on experience. The content of this program will include planning, management, finance, technical and production skills, underlying principles of technology and labor issues, community issues and health, safety and environmental issues as it relates to agricultural practices in horticulture, animal science and turf management.
Construction Management Academy
The Construction Management Academy will focus on the building construction industry. Its core purpose will be to prepare students for advanced training or employment. The academy will be open to juniors and seniors who are interested in participating in a sequence of courses that will provide rigorous content with challenging standards relevant to technical knowledge and skills needed for further education or careers in the Architecture and Construction career cluster. Through the study of the three competency-based applied learning building construction courses; Building Construction Technology I (junior year), Building Construction Technology II and III (senior year), students will gain technical skill proficiency, higher-order reasoning and problem-solving skills, work attitudes, general employability skills, technical skills and occupation-specific skills of all aspects of the construction industry. The study in the academy courses will explore various construction trades, as well as the foundation in construction management. Students will participate in many laboratory projects both in the classroom and in the construction community.
