13th Sumter County resident dies as Villages COVID-19 cases jump to 79

A 13th Sumter County resident has succumbed to the Coronavirus as the number of cases in The Villages increased to 79.

Information about the latest victim wasn’t provided by the Florida Department of Health on Tuesday. But with 177 residents testing positive in the county that contains the vast majority of Villages homes, that means 7 percent of those suffering from the virus – including residents Carol Lynch and Debbie Butler – have died.

Sumter County’s COVID-19 cases increased by four from Monday to Tuesday, with two of those being Villages residents. Those patients are comprised of 115 men and 62 women. They range in age from 17 to 97 and 40 have been hospitalized.

Those in Sumter County who have died as a result of the virus have been identified by the state as:

  • A 67-year-old woman who had traveled to Belize, Honduras, Mexico and other parts of Florida and been in contact with someone else suffering from the virus.
  • A 75-year-old man who have traveled to Panama and other parts of Florida and had been in contact with another COVID-19 patient.
  • A 68-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with someone else suffering from the virus
  • An 84-year-old woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.
  • An 85-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with someone else with the Coronavirus.
  • An 83-year-old woman who hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with another patient.
  • An 83-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.
  • A 65-year-old woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.
  • A 76-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with someone else suffering from the virus.
  • A 69-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another COVID-19 patient.
  • An 89-year-old woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.
  • An 89-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.
  • A 78-year-old woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient.

Besides the patients living in The Villages, others with the virus in Sumter County reside in Bushnell (59), Lake Panasoffkee (21), Wildwood (7), Webster (7), Coleman (3), Oxford (2) and Sumterville (1). Six cases also have been identified in the Lady Lake portion of the county.

Lake County is now reporting 226 COVID-19 cases – an increase of three in a 24-hour period. Those patients – 104 men, 110 women and 12 non-residents – range in age from 1 to 86. Ten have died from the virus and 60 have been hospitalized.

Besides the cases in The Villages, others in Lake County suffering from COVID-19 reside in Clermont (79), Leesburg (34), Eustis (16), Tavares (16), Mount Dora (14), Groveland (13), Mascotte (12), Lady Lake (10), Minneola (5), Sorrento (2), Okahumpka (1), Montverde (1), Umatilla (1), Howey-in-the-Hills (1), Grand Island (1) and Yalaha (1).

Marion County now has 160 Coronavirus patients, an increase of nine from Monday to Tuesday. They are comprised of 70 men, 87 women and three non-residents. They range in age from 2 to 96 and at least one is a Villages resident. There have been four deaths and 23 people have required hospital care.

Besides the patient living in The Villages and the 19 in Summerfield, the cases in Marion County have been identified in Ocala (115), Citra (7), Dunnellon (5), Belleview (4), Anthony (3), Ocklawaha (2), Silver Springs (1) and Reddick (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 32,846 COVID-19 cases, with 31,986 being among Florida residents. There have been 860 deaths and 1,171 have been hospitalized.
