Officials note clubs must abide by size limit that governor ignored in The Villages

Community Development District 7 supervisors took note of the fact that clubs and social groups still face restrictions on the size of gatherings at recreation centers in The Villages, but Gov. Ron DeSantis ignored the rule.

The governor was at Eisenhower Recreation Center on Wednesday with an invitation-only audience before the Newsmax cameras.

“There were no masks. It was a packed house,” said Supervisor Steve Lapp at Thursday’s board meeting at Savannah Center.

The board meeting, like all District government meetings for the past year, was conducted in adherence to Centers for Disease Control guidelines with regard to social distancing. All of those attending the CDD 7 meeting were wearing masks.

CDD 7 Board Chairman Jerry Vicenti is president of the Italian Paisans Club, a large social club. He pointed out that clubs are still limited to 50 percent attendance at recreation centers in The Villages.

“When you have a club with 300 members, you’re really taking a hit,” Vicenti said.

It was noted that the governor’s Wednesday event was held in a 500-seat venue at Eisenhower Recreation Center.

“They should only have had 250,” Vicenti said.

Supervisors noted that DeSantis obviously flouted the rule.

“He’s the governor,” Lapp said.
