Spent six months in neck, back brace after bicycle tire got stuck in grate in Kenya Villas

To the Editor:

I read with interest recent letters to the editor about spacing in the sewer grates as a danger to bike riders and would like to ad my experience as a warning to others.
In December 2014 while cycling in the Kenya Villas my front wheel (road bike) got caught in the grate edge space. I was taken to the Ocala Trauma Center with a fractured C-1, fractured T-3 and T-4, fractured left hand and a concussion. Almost six months in a back and neck brace before returning to activities. As with the previous letter writer, the helmet probably saved my life.
I reported the accident to the Sumter Landing Bike Club and it’s my hope The Villages will provide a fix.
