‘A Year with Frog and Toad’ a fun-filled musical all will enjoy

Don Simson

Grab the family, kids and grandkids and head north to The Hippodrome Theatre in Gainesville for a fun-filled “G” rated musical all will enjoy.

Frog (Bryan Mercer) and Toad (Clinton Thornton) are two best friends. We follow them through the four seasons starting with awakening from hibernation in the spring and back to winter and hibernation.

“A Year with Frog and Toad” is playing at The Hippodrome.

Accompanying Frog and Toad are three other characters – Nick Lerew*, Marissa Toogood* and  Maya Naff* who portray many creatures in the swamp forest – i.e. birds, turtles, squirrels, snails, moles, etc. (some imagination is necessary though well interpreted.) Through dialogue, songs, and well choreographed dance, the different seasons, Frog and Toad’s emotions, problems and concerns are addressed. Even the Snail with the Mail who puts the “Go” in escargot elicits some laughs. If you want to have a wonderful entertaining show and introduce children and grandchildren to “live” theatre, “A Year with Frog and Toad” is a do not miss opportunity.

The thrust stage, which puts the audience on three unobstructed sides, is set  in a unique stile which makes scene changes very easy with most props handy for the, at times, fast paced action. The play runs through Dec. 17 with matinee’s on Sunday. For tickets go to www.thehipp.org  [*actors equity association]
