Villager seriously injured in golf cart crash near tunnel on way to Brownwood

A 76-year-old Village of Lynnhaven resident returned home Sunday from Ocala Regional Medical Center as he continues to recover from a serious golf cart crash this past week.

Jerry Marsh with his golf cart prior to the accident

Jerry Marsh had been driving his 2015 Yamaha golf cart at 2:21 p.m. Thursday when it overturned after it was struck by another golf cart at the tunnel that connects the multi-modal path from the Village of Pinellas to the Village of Gilchrist and runs under Buena Vista Boulevard.

Dixie Kautz, 77, had been riding in the golf cart with Marsh, and said they had been on their way to Brownwood Paddock Square. Both were thrown from the golf cart, she said.

“I must have slid across the pavement,” said Kautz.

She said she has 20 stitches in her face and “bruises all over my body.”

She was also transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Kautz said Marsh’s injuries were more severe than her injuries. He suffered a head injury.

Their golf cart was struck by a golf cart, also a 2015 Yamaha, driven by 69-year-old Dennis Joseph Shannon of Chesterfield, Mo., according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. Shannon told the trooper investigating the crash that he had not seen Marsh’s golf cart, the accident report indicated. He had been coming out of the tunnel and failed to yield to the other golf cart.

Shannon was ticketed on a charge of running a stop sign. He was not injured.

The report indicated Marsh’s golf cart was not equipped with seatbelts.
