‘Little bit of weed’ lands Oxford man behind bars

Gerald Cole Jr.

An Oxford man who complained he was being arrested for a “little bit of weed” landed behind bars after a K-9 alerted on his vehicle.

Gerald Lynn Cole Jr., 36, was driving a turquoise Nissan pickup truck at 7:48 p.m. Friday in the vicinity of Powell Road and State Road 44 when he was pulled over for having no vehicle registration, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

A K-9 unit was summoned to the scene and the dog alerted on the truck, signaling the likely presence of drugs. A clear bag containing marijuana was found in the front pocket of Cole’s pants.

Cole was on the phone with his girlfriend and told her, “I’m going to jail for a little bit of weed in my pocket.”

He was arrested on charges of marijuana possession and failure to register a motor vehicle. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $2,500 bond.
