Charges dropped against tasered woman arrested over loud music

Michelle Spankie

A woman who was tasered twice after refusing to turn down loud music at her home won’t face criminal charges in the case.

Michelle Denise Spankie, 47, had been arrested earlier this month after law enforcement surrounded her home in Fruitland Park after she refused to turn down loud music which had prompted complaints from her neighbors.

Spankie had been facing charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, breach of the peace and resisting arrest.

However, last week in Lake County Court, the prosecutor’s office announced no information would be filed in the case and Spankie has been refunded the $12,000 bond she had posted in the case following her arrest.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies and Fruitland Park police on the night of Sept. 14 surrounded her home at 4603 Pine St. after she repeatedly refused to turn down the music, according to an arrest report from the sheriff’s office.

“No, I will not turn my music down, it’s my right to play music as loud as I want,” she told the first deputy who arrived on the scene.

A second deputy arrived as backup and Spankie continued to defy orders to turn down her music. She struggled with the deputies as they attempted to restrain her and she struck one of them in the face. Spankie’s pit bull began barking at the deputies and bit one of them on the bicep. She broke free and ran into the house, locking the doors. The deputies called for additional backup.

Once the home was surrounded, the deputies made forced entry into the home and Spankie was tasered twice. She was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center for treatment after the taser deployments.

Twice in 2018, Spankie had been served with injunctions for protection against repeat violence. One involved a man and the other involved a woman. Both were later dropped.
