A dog that attacked another dog being walked by a couple in the Village of Buttonwod earlier this month will be put down.
The American Staffordshire Terrier involved in the Oct. 11 attack on Dalecroft Trail has been surrendered by its owner to Sumter County Animals Services, according to Sumter County Assistant Director for Services Jeff Atkin.
He confirmed the dog will be euthanized.
“The animal was determined to be dangerous and will be put down as it is not safe to adopt. The owner will not be cited as this was an unprovoked attack,” Atkin said.
By “unprovoked attack,” Atkin said the dog’s owner did not in any way encourage or promote the attack.
The couple who had been attacked required hospitalization.
