World War II veteran Gene Megyesi was accompanied on the April Villages Honor Flight by Villager Robert Hempel.
The two men recently took in the Brad Pitt movie, “Fury.”
Megyesi, now 90 years old, went to training school to become a tank driver and then off to war.
“Knowing that Gene was in the Army and drove a tank into Germany during World War II, I thought it would be fun to take him to see the new movie which is about a tank division invading Germany,” Hempel said. “To make it even more special, several of my friends joined us for the movie and dinner afterwards.  What a unique perspective he gave us on Hollywood vs reality. We all thoroughly enjoyed seeing the movie and discussing it with a bonafide WWII Army Hero.”
Villages Honor Flight is about much more than a one-day whirlwind trip to the nation’s capitol.
What makes Villages Honor Flight stand out from other chapters around the country, is the emphasis placed on the veterans’ relationships with their Guardians.
Guardians see to the veterans needs on the trip to Washington D.C. and push them in a wheelchair so they can comfortably see the war memorials.
It is a goal for the relationship to be built prior to the trip and to continue long after.
