Ocala man involved in crash that leaves pedestrian dead

An Ocala man’s SUV struck a pedestrian, who was then run over by another vehicle on State Road 46 early Thursday morning.

Michael Skeeters, 54, of Sorrento, was killed in the incident, which happened shortly before 2 a.m. near Long Acres in Lake County. He was standing on the north shoulder of SR 46 and then attempted to cross the roadway in front of a westbound 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Josue Torres Soto, of Ocala. Torres was unable to avoid Skeeters as the front of his SUV collided with him, a Florida Highway Patrol report states.

Skeeters was then run over by a 2014 Audi Q5 driven by 67-year-old Aaron Leavitt, of Sorrento. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical examiner. And it hasn’t been determined if alcohol played a factor in the incident, which still is under investigation, the FHP report says.
