Carolyn Smail

Carolyn Smail, 89, of The Villages, Florida, a fantastic lady loved by many, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2015 at Brownwood Care Center, Wildwood, Florida. Carolyn was born on December 21, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA. She was the daughter and one of four siblings of Lud and Catherine Wineman of Vandergrift, PA. Carolyn was preceded in death by her brother, Lud “Sonny” Wineman of Conroe, TX., and her sister Kass Gallagher (Wineman) of Auburn, MA. Carolyn is survived by her sister Charlotte Held (Wineman) of Apollo, PA, her loving son Raymond of New Albany, OH., and her long-time friend Corinne Whitehead of The Villages, FL.
Carolyn was highly respected for being a life-long hard and dedicated worker. Prior to moving to The Villages in 1994, she served as a Medical Records Analyst for Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh, PA), the Director of Medical Records and Utilization Review for Ligonier Valley Treatment Center (Stahlstown, PA), Medical Records Department Head for Kane Regional Center (Pittsburgh, PA), and Area Review Coordinator for Keystone Peer Review Organization (Pittsburgh, PA), After moving to the Villages, she served as the Director of Medical Records for Lady Lake Specialty Care (Lady Lake, FL). Carolyn possessed a zeal for learning and life-long education. In 1979 she obtained an Associate of Science Degree in Medical records, at the age of 54, from Robert Morris College, Pittsburgh, PA. in 1984 she completed a Legal Assistant/Paralegal certification program at Robert Morris College, Pittsburgh, PA. She remained active in continuing education and participation in national and state medical records professional organizations. Carolyn loved music and was noted for her beautiful voice. She performed numerous solos in church and community programs, in addition to singing in church choirs. All who knew Carolyn marveled at how she always took care to dress well and look her best. She was a faithful Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and watched as many games as she could. A Memorial Service for Carolyn will be at 2 p.m., Friday, November 6, 2015, at The Chapel of All Faiths, The Villages, FL. Her son is grateful to Brownwood Care Center for providing Carolyn with excellent care. In lieu of flowers, kindly donate to the American Lung Association or the American Kidney Foundation. Interment will be at a later date at Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, PA.
