A second person in a week was arrested after a second disturbance at home in the Village of Dunedin.
Sumter County sheriff’s deputies were called Saturday night to 1351 Zest Ave. in the Leyton Villas, where 67-year-old Denise Weiten said that her son was in her home “destroying everything inside,” according to an arrest report. The report noted that Weiten was intoxicated and seated in a golf cart, which was in the middle of the street. Weiten had been arrested on Veterans Day on a charge of battery after an altercation with a man over the use of her golf cart.
When deputies entered the home, they found Weiten’s adult son and found “the living room was visibly in disarray,” the report said. There was glass from a broken table, stuffing coming out of a hole in a chair, a broken iPad, and scattered throughout the home were hollowed-out 410 shotgun shells. A deputy also found a pipe used for smoking marijuana sitting on top of a dresser.
Thomas Van Ert, 67, who co-owns the home with Weiten, admitted the pipe belonged to him. Residue on the pipe field tested positive for marijuana.
Deputies opted to postpone Van Ert’s arrest.
“Mr. Vanert was not arrested on scene due to Ms. Weiten’s intoxicated state and her being belligerent and the need for him to take care of her for the evening,” the report said.
The Wisconsin native was taken into custody the following day on a charge of possession of drug equipment. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center and released after posting $1,000 bond.
Weiten’s adult son was not taken into custody.
Weiten and Van Ert purchased their villa in 2014 for $152,800.
