Yard sale aims to raise $10,000 for Carpenters for Christ

Early birds were out bargain hunting Friday morning at the annual Giant Weekend Yard Sale at New Life Presbyterian Church on U.S. 441/27 in Fruitland Park.

Barbie Birdsall, one of the organizers of the event, said she expects to raise as much as $10,000 over the weekend. Some 4,000 people are expected from throughout the area.

The Giant Weekend Yard Sale is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon, and Birdsall said bargain hunters should come early.

“Come early to get the choice merchandise, or come late on Sunday when we’re deciding what items to store for our next yard sale and which items we’ll sell for a quarter,” Birdsall said.

The Giant Weekend Yard Sale is the principal fundraiser for the church’s Carpenters for Christ program, whose volunteers build wheelchair ramps and make minor house repairs for people throughout the area who are physically, mentally or financially challenged.
