Low-water pressure problems in Oxford being addressed

Growth in the Oxford area is driving the need for a north well to be added to Wildwood’s water system.

City commissioners Monday adopted a facility plan for the $1.05-million well, which is planned near the southwest corner of County Road 466 and U.S. 301.

About half the cost of the well, or $500,000, is in the state budget and more state funding could be available, said assistant city manager Jason McHugh.

The facility plan, prepared by consultant Kimley-Horn and Associates, found that the city receives frequent complaints of poor water pressure in the Oxford area during peak demand periods. Low water pressure also could hamper fire protection. Most of the area’s drinking water comes from the southern part of the city and is pumped up to 17 miles.

“As growth continues to occur, this problem will only be exacerbated and may result in the city postponing or even denying development permits,” stated the facility plan summary. “In order to provide the quantities of drinking water needed and to alleviate the low pressure issues, the city must obtain a source of supply in the northern service area.”

In other business, commissioners:

· Approved plats for a 129-home neighborhood and the 63-unit Longleaf Villas in the Village of Fenney as well as the site plan for the second portion of Fenney Way, the main road into the development along County Road 468 several miles south of State Road 44.

· Voted to buy two new 2015 police cars for $52,000. Mayor Ed Wolf cast the lone vote against the purchase because he said it should be done as part of the budget process
